The 2020 Ford Super Duty lineup is the ultimate in pickup-truck technology and capabilities. These heavy-duty trucks can tow large loads and double as family transport. Tradesmen will love the most basic version, while business executives will appreciate the more luxurious trims. With any of the three V-8 engines, there’s plenty of power and torque. The most powerful diesel on sale is also available. Ford adds to the package with a variety of driver-assistance options and an intuitive infotainment system. The 2020 Super Duty pickups, regardless of their configuration, prove that modern heavy-duty trucks can be done.

What’s new for 2020?

Ram and General Motors both introduced new heavy-duty pickups. The Blue Oval, however, enhances its 2020 Super Duty lineup by adding the most powerful engines to its HD trucks and the highest towing ratings. The refreshed 2020 Super Duty offers a wide range of configurations and options. The front ends of all three models are redesigned, while the dual-rear-wheel models get a unique look.

Pickup truck prices can be quite varied due to the many options available and their wide range of configurations. The F-250 is our recommendation. The Lariat model has more desirable options and standard features than the XLT. Crew cabs are very popular due to their spacious accommodations. We would choose one for our F-250 with the 6.75-foot cargo mattress. Although the Power Stroke diesel’s power is appealing, it doesn’t make sense for us to spend the additional $10,495. However, we would pay $2045 for the new 7.3 liter V-8 engine and 10-speed automatic transmission and $3185 for the optional four wheel-drive system. FX4 Offroad package upgrades our truck to tackle trails. The Lariat Value package adds upscale amenities such as heated and ventilated front seats and LED cargo-box lighting. Remote start is also available.

Performance, Transmission and Engine

Standard equipment on the F-250, F-350 and F-350 includes a gasoline 6.2-liter V-8 with 385 horsepower and 430 Lb-ft torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, but most Super Duties have a 10-speed auto gearbox. All models are available with either rear-wheel or four-wheel drive and can be outfitted with more powerful engines. There is a gas-fed 7.3-liter V-8 with 430 horses and 475lb-ft, and a powerful Power Stroke diesel 6.7 liter V-8 with 475 horses. Tremor, an off-road package for the Super Duty, adds a lift kit, meatier tires and other upgrades that are suitable for use on trails. These Fords are as strong and durable as you would expect for big rigs that can tow 19 tons. The ride feels stiff and bouncy when unladen, but it becomes more comfortable once the bed or trailer are loaded up. Even though the most expensive trims are better at muting wind and road noises on the highway, all models have a ponderous feeling while driving on the highway. This is due to the disconnected feedback from the helm. The trucks we tested had responsive brake pedals that were firm and responsive. They also managed to steer in tight spaces and at low speeds where it can be challenging to maneuver long models.

Towing and Payload Capacity

The Super Duty offers a variety in cab and cargo bed configurations that allow for a wide range in maximum towing and payload capacities. Each version has generous ratings in both these categories. Ford fans who are looking for the best will be pleased to know that the Super Duty can haul up to 7850 pounds, pull up 24,200 pounds with a standard trailer hitch, and carry 37,000 pounds with a fifth wheel and gooseneck hitch.

Fuel Economy and Real World MPG

The EPA does not test Super Duty trucks as heavy as its competitors. Therefore, we are unable to judge their performance based on what we have done. Ford has updated the powertrain options on its heavy-duty pickup trucks. We will need to wait to see the new models before we can evaluate their highway fuel economy and real-world mpg. The standard F-250 model’s 6.2-liter V-8 is still used with a six-speed auto transmission. It earned 15 mpg highway. The gas-powered Chevy 2500HD returned 14 MPG in the same test. The optional Power Stroke diesel engine that comes with Super Duty is expected to be the most efficient in fuel consumption.

Interior, Comfort, & Cargo

The Super Duty is a combination of fashion and function. It has a sleek design and a practical layout. Even the most stripped-down Super Duty interiors can be ergonomic with simple controls and materials that are meant to get messy. The Lariat trim level introduces leather-trimmed upholstery, upscale options like ambient lighting, heated front seats and wireless charging. You will feel like royalty if you opt for the King Ranch, Platinum, or Limited premium trim levels. There are still some small details that can make even the most expensive models’ interiors look dated. The buyers have two options for bed size: a 6.75-footer and an 8-foot box. However, the regular cab cannot be equipped with the longer box. A large center-console bin is a highlight of the Super Duty’s numerous cubbies, versatile trays, and bucket seat models, respectively. Crew Cabs have a lockable storage box under the rear seat.

Connectivity and Infotainment

Every Super Duty model except the base XL comes standard with an 8.0 inch touchscreen infotainment screen. It’s easy to use and has a lot of features, including Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and a Wi Fi hotspot. You can upgrade it with a 10-speaker B&O (Bang & Olufsen), stereo, and SiriusXM satellite radio. This requires a paid subscription for the first three months. The system feels intuitive thanks to the large volume and tuning knobs, as well as the physical buttons on your steering wheel. You can fit larger cabs with enough accessories outlets to light up a Guns ‘Roses’ concert. This includes up to two 110-volt power points.
